Rev. Dr. Lois Naomie Sundeen
It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of Rev. Lois Naomie Sundeen on
May 7th. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday two days before.
Rev. Sundeen may be best known to the Central Atlantic Conference as the Area
Conference Minister for the New Jersey Association, a position in which she served
from 1975-1989. This made her the very first woman to serve in such a role in a
Conference in the United Church of Christ. During her ministry Rev. Sundeen also
served on the Missions Council of the Congregational Christian Churches, as Director
of Christian Education at Bethany Church in Montpelier VT, and as Associate Conference Minister for Christian Education in the Vermont Conference UCC. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Rev. Sundeen also graduated from Chicago Theological Seminary and received an Honorary Doctorate from that seminary in 1977.
Rev. Sundeen was known for her deep love and passion for the United Church of
Christ and its core values. She was also known as being clear thinking, fun loving,
and a consummate leader who paved the way for many women leaders in ministry.
